Now that we have an actual site, let’s start making it look like we want it to look. Since this is a pet related site, I would like to use a template (theme) that will fit the site. I search the internet and find a theme that I like. The template is (download link)->Best Friends and a demo site can be viewed here. The file will be downloaded as a .zip file. In order to use it, we will need a .zip reader. I use the excellent PKZIP from PKWare. All you need to do to open the file is double click the downloaded zip file, and it is extracted. The download link is here.
Once the file is unzipped, we will need to upload it to our site. This is best accomplished using an FTP program. If you are using Firefox, just get the FireFTP add-on. To upload the files, set up Fireftp with your login information, including username and password.
If you need help with the settings, let me know. If you are not using Firefox, you can use the open source Filezilla. Upload the files to your wp-content/themes file. Then, go to yoursite.com/wp-admin, login, and choose the new theme. Your site should now look something like the demo site referenced above.
Next, we want to find some plugins that will allow us to control spam, create meta tags, allow users to bookmark our posts to social bookmarking sites, and help us monetize our site. With this site, we want to provide our visitors with quality, relevant information about pets, as well as try to make some money from advertisements on our site. To do that easily, let’s find some appropriate plugins. You, of course, can add any that you like, but for demonstration purposes, these are the plugins we will be using:
To monetize our blog, we will be using Google’s Adsense, Commission Junction, The Pepperjam Network, Ebay Partner Network, and Amazon Associates. You can go ahead and sign up with them if you’d like, we’ll discuss them in more detail in the next section.
